リハーサルとレコーディング ／Rehearsal & Recording

先日のラジオ(Suono Dolce)に出演する前のリハーサルの話だけど、新しいメンバーと一緒に

曲のアレンジもしながら音も録っている。時間かけてしまうほどこってしまうので、なるべくいいペースがキープできるように進めている。

These are photos from our studio session before we were on the radio last week doing a studio performance. We do our rehearsals a lot of the time at a small surf shop in Sendagaya called "Samudra". But for our next album we wanted to record with a full drum sound so we've started using this small private studio in Shimokitazawa. (It's where the 3rd Street Blues Band rehearses too)

セットアップとしては、macbookの昔の黒いやつを使って、MOTUのTraveller をD/Aインタフェースにしている。チャネルを増やすために別にD/AインタフェースもSyncしている。基本10トラックでドラムとベース、歌とキーボードをまとめて録音している。

The setup is really simple. My old black macbook with a MOTU Traveller D/A and another prosonus D/A synced to give us more channels. The bass and keyboards go in direct after being preamplified, no micing. Thought I really think the Rhodes sounds better with an amp speaker being mic recorded. I guess we'll have to reserve that for some overdubs considering our confined recording space with no partitions. (Or we can just let it bleed into the drum mics. I haven't decided what sounds best for what songs yet.)

どうしてもボーカルマイクがドラムを拾うから歌だけは別テークで上書きをする事にしている。俺が歌う時は声がドラムマイクにも入るから、仮は静かに歌って最初に入れるようにしている。

Vocals are always going to be overdubbed after we record the band together, because the condenser mics pick up too much of the drums to be practical for a recorded album mix.

 キーボードは今回は On The RocksのRhodesとMicrokorgを使っている。アンプを介して音は録るようにしている。

This is a photo of the vintage Fender Rhodes we're recording with. We'll be using this for our show on the 21st too

ドラムのマイクはできるだけシンプルに録音している。

We keep the drum recording simple. But I guess we could cut down on the number of mics we're using. Getting the top mics to give the mix a stereo feel make the drums sound bigger, so I always like doing that. But this time I wasn't able to get the snare sound I wanted to. We used Sure 57 for the bottomm and  58 for the top. I should have had a separate preamp for these mics....
